Moment of sublime strangeness: Medvedev on photography

A little Friday fun for you: the Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, on a 7-minute rant on the nature of photography. I love the way this is all delivered straight to camera, as if he really wants every last Russian to know his thoughts on the subject. Would love to know who wrote this speech for him.

Would be nice if Mr Obama did the same…

Compelling! Is it too naive to think that maybe he wrote some of it himself? He seems genuinely interested in photography…

Kind of creepy, innit? Yes, he does seem to have written at least part of it himself. I wonder whether the original speech is as abominable as its English subtitles…

Too bad he sees photography in such a simple light: one that promotes it as a method of recording world events for nostalgic posterity’s sake. A camera club type view of an art form that is equal to any other. An art form that, when practiced by genius’s like Andreas Gursky, can evoke emotions as profound as those stirred by the likes of Leanardo DaVinci. There is a oneness in art, despite its conflicting approaches, and that oneness transcends all mechanics. Try reading what A D Coleman has to say about this.

Don’t be an elitist snob Bill. What did you expect ? He’s the president, and he wants to speak to every russian. Photography means diferent things for diferent people. The good thing is that it brings all of them together. Also, fuck andreas gursky and his 2 million dollars digitally manipulated landscapes.
